3.5.1.180 Suitable Activity - Study (PP)

Summary

For those PP recipients with participation requirements (3.5.1.160), approved full-time and part-time study may be included in an EPP. This study will be taken into account for the purpose of fulfilling participation requirements, including mutual obligation.

PP recipients who do not have participation requirements may also undertake full-time and part-time study on a voluntary basis.

PP recipients do not have any mandatory requirements prior to their youngest child turning 6 years old. However, study can be undertaken on a voluntary basis prior to the commencement of mandatory participation requirements.

Once mandatory participation requirements have commenced for recipients with a youngest child aged 6 or 7, approved study may be undertaken. PP recipients undertaking at least 30 hours of study per fortnight are considered to be fully meeting their participation requirements, where the 30 hours of study includes both contact and non-contact hours. To fully meet requirements the approved study must be included in the PP recipient's EPP.

PP recipients who are undertaking approved part-time (less than 30 hours per fortnight), education or training (1.1.P.418) are not required to accept offers of employment if the hours of work conflict with the contact hours of study, so long as the education or training is included in their EPP. PP recipients undertaking approved part-time (less than 30 hours per fortnight) study are required to accept suitable offers of part-time employment where the hours of work would fit around their study schedule.

Single PP recipients undertaking approved full-time or part-time study may qualify for PES (3.8.3.10).

The following table summarises under what conditions full and part-time study can be undertaken.

PP recipients (prior to youngest child turning 6)

PP recipients, with youngest child aged 6 or 7

- Can undertake full-time or part-time study, on voluntary basis.

- PPS recipients may receive PES for approved study.

- Can undertake approved full-time or part-time study as part of EPP.

- PPS recipients may receive PES for approved study.

- Approved full-time or part-time (30 hours per fortnight) study included in the EPP fully satisfies all participation requirements.

- PP recipients who are undertaking approved part-time (less than 30 hours per fortnight) study that is included in an EPP are not required to accept offers of employment if the hours of work conflict with the contact hours of study so long as the education or training is included in their EPP.

Note: While PP recipients with mandatory participation requirements are able to enrol in and complete higher degrees, such as a Doctor of Philosophy or most Masters degrees, this should be discouraged. PP recipients should be encouraged to undertake courses that will help them get a job and which are of a vocational nature.
