Australian Working Life Residence - General Principles Glossary

Australian working life residence refers to the period of residence in Australia between age 16 and age pension age. If the rate of an agreement pension is calculated on a proportional basis the proportion to be paid is based on AWLR up to a maximum of 25 years (300 months). Working life residence is calculated in whole months and a full month is added for odd days. The person's own AWLR is used in the calculation of the proportional rate unless:

  • (a) the person is a member of a couple, is getting Age or DSP and the partner is also getting Age or DSP - in which case, the partner's period of Australian working life residence is used if it is longer,
  • (b) the person gets a WP or a CP - in which case the AWLR of the age or disability support pensioner is used, or
  • (c) a person gets a pension as a de jure widow - in which case the late husband's period of AWLR is used if it is longer than the widow's.
