Definition

For the purposes of RAFS and RASF, an eligible descendant in relation to a farmer or their partner includes:

  • their child, stepchild or adopted child,
  • a descendant in direct line of a child, stepchild or adopted child (see example), OR
  • another person who, in the opinion of the Secretary, should be treated as a child or descendant in direct line of a child.
  • Example: A grandchild.

Discretion exists that allows a younger niece or nephew, or other relative, who has been working the farm to be considered an eligible descendant.

Guidance regarding when discretion should be exercised can be obtained through FaHCSIA Means Test Policy Section following referral from the appropriate Centrelink Help Desk.
