Definition

For the purpose of YA and Austudy, an approved scholarship course is a course of study or instruction set out in the Social Security (Approved Scholarship Courses) Determination 2010 (No. 1).

There are 2 types of approved scholarship courses where they are undertaken at a higher education institution:

  • higher education preparatory courses - courses offered by a higher education institution that are designed to assist people to gain entry to higher education level courses (including enabling and bridging courses), and
  • accredited higher education courses, these include a course that is:
    • accredited as a higher education course by an authority responsible for the accreditation of higher education courses in a state or territory, or
    • if a higher education institution is authorised by a law of the Commonwealth or a law of the state or territory in which the institution is located to accredit its own higher education courses - a course conducted and accredited as a higher education course by that institution.
